Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), including acupuncture, is on the way to be covered by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the United States.
According to recent surveys, 75% of Americans have been using some form of alternative therapy for their health needs, and more than 38 million adults make in excess of 300 million visits to acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, and other complementary and alternative practitioners each year in the United States. There are no similar surveys conducted in Canada but the trend is expected the same.
The news for ACA to cover acupuncture is definitely a big step forward for the profession, and it is expected to be fully implemented in 2014. It would be interesting to see what kind of impact this may bring to Canada then.
