Insufficient and Termination of Lactation

Postpartum agalactia, insufficient and termination of breast milk is difficult for both mother and infant. The mother may experience swelling and pain in the breasts or may develop mastitis as well as miss the enhancement in bonding with the infant that breast-feeding offers. The infant suffers from a lack of the ideal nutrition that breast milk provides and may even lead to unnecessary digestive and emotional stress.

There are gerneral concerns about taking certain prescription drugs to produce breast milk might affect the infants health, but fewer knows acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine provide natural, side-effect free and superb effective treatment to enhance milk flow for nursing mothers. The result from acupuncture to enhance the milk flow for health moms can be immediate and long lasting.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes milk is transformed from Qi and blood as they both are part of essence for our body to perform normal activities. The production of Qi and blood depends on many internal organs such as Liver, Spleen, Lungs and Kidneys.

According to Traditional Chinese medicine, insufficient and/or termination of lactation might be caused by one or a combination of both deficiency of Qi and blood or liver Qi stagnation.

To make the correct diagnosis, we would also look at other manifestations such as;

  • pulse,
  • tongue,
  • secretion,
  • hardness of the breasts,
  • pain in the breast,
  • lassitude,
  • emotions, irritability,
  • exhaustion,
  • appetite and stools.
