Acupuncture
Dr. Xu is widely acknowledged as the driving force behind the modern-day acupuncture system, having successfully lobbied for acupuncture’s transition from the labor board to the health board of Alberta. This legislation leap was a groundbreaking move that legitimized acupuncture in the health field and ensured a basic level of competency required to practice in the province.

Dr. Xu is also known for his instrumental role in establishing international partnerships with other Traditional Chinese Medicine Universities, which has resulted in unique education opportunities and patents for the Acupuncture and TCM Profession. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in forging a partnership between ACATCM and University of Calgary to further drive research and development within the acupuncture field.

Community
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Xu championed a community-based outreach program that utilized acupuncture and online seminars to help the most vulnerable. His dedication and compassion in these efforts have made a profound impact on the community.

Culture
Dr. Xu has showcased his other talents in cultural events, including directing and producing a unique online Chinese New Years event on YouTube during the Covid lockdown. He has also been instrumental in promoting concerts of traditional Chinese folk music modernized in composition and instruments.

Research
Dr. Benny Xu’s leadership in research has been instrumental in the success of the Alberta Complementary Health Integration Project (ABCHIP). As the first of its kind in Canada, ABCHIP has paved the way for the integration of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine in patient care. Dr. Xu’s dedication to advancing the field of integrative medicine has been invaluable, and his contributions have helped to bringing the research of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to the mainstream.

The Alberta Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities or the province of Alberta in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th anniversary of accession to the throne. Dr. Xu is one of 7,000 outstanding Albertans who received this medal in 2022.
