Dr. Benny Xu

Dr. Benny Xu has been bestowed with the highest honor in recognition of his valuable contribution to the province of Alberta as one of the recipients of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal, 2022. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada, acknowledges the significant contributions of Albertans.

An outstanding practitioner and a pioneer in the field of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and acupuncture, Dr. Xu has been recognized for his exceptional services and contributions to the development of TCM education and training in Alberta. In 2005, he received the Alberta Centennial Medal, a prestigious award given to exceptional Albertans who have made significant contributions to society.

As a third-generation TCM doctor, Dr. Xu initiated a movement in the early 1990s that transformed the acupuncture profession from “Alberta Labour” to “Alberta health.” In 1997, he founded the Alberta College of Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine, a remarkable contribution that led to partnerships with prestigious institutions such as Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine, Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine China.

Dr. Xu’s dedication to the advancement of acupuncture and TCM in Alberta is unmatched. Most recently, in partnership with the University of Calgary and the Government of Alberta, he led the first major Acupuncture research program in Canada, the Alberta Complementary Health Integration Project (ABCHIP), which yielded exceptional outcomes.

A proud Albertan, Dr. Xu has served on various not-for-profit organization boards and government committees, including the original Alberta Acupuncture Committee, the Advisory Committee for The Integrated Health Institute at Mount Royal University, Alberta Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Council, and currently serves as a member of the Alberta Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society.

Dr. Xu has been practicing acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in Calgary since 1992, inspiring and transforming the lives of many through his exceptional skills and dedication.
